Islanders snap 14-game skid, look to carry on winning vs. rival Rangers

Now with their first win following a 14-game winless streak, the New York Islanders have their sights set on Thursday night and making it two in a row when they host the rival New York Islanders on Long Island.

The Islanders snapped the second longest winless streak in team history this past Friday evening, scoring a 2-0 win over the New Jersey Devils on Long Island.

Goalie Rick DiPietro stopped all 29 shots he faced, as the Islanders barely steered clear of matching the club record of 15 games without a win, set from Nov. 22-Dec. 23, 1999.

“It’s like a big weight was taken off our shoulders,” Islanders center John Tavares told the media afterwards. “It was a great job by the penalty killers, and a great job by Ricky.

Jesse Joensuu and Rob Schremp tallied for the Islanders, who are 1-11-3 in their last 15 games since Oct 21. The win was the first for Islanders coach Jack Capuano since replacing the fired Scott Gordon recently.

“I was happy for the guys,” Capuano said later that night. “We’ve worked very hard lately, and it’s nice to get rewarded.”

After playing 12 of their first 17 games on the road, the Islanders are now in a stretch where they don’t have to leave the Island, with 10 of 14 at Nassau Coliseum.

While a modest two-game streak would not be much to crow about, the Islanders would like nothing better than to beat the rival Rangers when the two square off Thursday night.
