Cowboys State of the Union

With the season in Dallas statistically and probably out of contention for the year, save for a few die hards’ outcries, it might not be too early to start looking to the draft and what positions the Cowboys should be looking to upgrade or fill. After watching the team essentially implode and be reborn this season, it’s easy to look past the trouble spots on the roster after 3 games of very good play by the team. That being said, the Cowboys are are still in desperate need of a ball hawking safety and or a strong fiery inside linebackers to go along with upgrading the O-line. Dallas is starting to look like they are going to cut Marion Barber after this season, after another unproductive season from the once dominant back. The Cowboys should really look into trading off Felix Jones as well.

It was important to get him onto the field to see what he has and what Jones has shown is very mediocre play as a full time starter. To put it simply, you can’t function as a team with a back who is a one trick guy, it’s too easy for teams to shut down. Dallas isn’t the only team with this issue either, where you have a fast home run hitter and your big pile moving bruiser back. Though this has been successful before, it’s never a mix that lasts for season after season. We need a guy who can run between the tackles, catch the ball well, pass block, and break off a long gain. Now, I’m aware that those guys are usually, top 10 guys drafted each year, but if the Boys do their due diligence it’s not unheard of to find a good back late in the 1st or even the 2nd round with that talent (Rashard Mendenhall, Chris Johnson, Arian Foster). Felix Jones is just not a very consistent player and tends to have nagging injuries. That leaves Tashard Choice, who is currently 3rd on the depth chart, but has played well when given the chance. He may not be the answer, but could fill the role nicely until a better option surfaced.

Tony Romo, has been reported to be throwing the ball a bit in practices and some are reporting locally that Romo may play before the season is over. This would really not be very beneficial to the team, putting the franchise quarterback in late in the season at a time where there isn’t much for the team to accomplish outside of maybe playing spoiler. It’s definitely something to applaud that Romo is trying to get back in, but the risk clearly isn’t worth it. Jon Kitna is playing well and unless there was something to gain post season it would be best to keep Romo on the sideline.

The Cowboys have Indianapolis coming up this Sunday in a very iffy game, Peyton Manning is rarely bad in back to back performances and with Dallas’ issues in the secondary they could be in for a tough day against Manning and the Colts. The game is not out of reach by any means, as Manning does tend to struggle against 3-4 defenses, especially those with an effective pass rush. So Dallas will have a chance to win, but they will have to establish ball control with the run game much the way San Diego did last week if they are to have a chance to play spoiler this week.

All in all things are looking up for the Cowboys and they are giving fans something to look forward to throughout the season even if they are not playoff bound.
