Purdue comes to hostile and snowy Blacksburg coming off a heartbreaking loss to Richmond. The Hokies are also coming off a loss to UNLV in the championship round of the 76 Classic. The Hokies main theme of the season has been lack of depth. They have resorted to using Freshman Tyrone Garland while Erick Green nurses a leg injury. They also are without two standout players in JT Thompson and Allen Chaney for the season. The second theme of the Hokies year has been sloppy play. Tech shot 9/21 from the free throw line in their last game. They also had 16 turnovers, and have been in foul trouble in every game this year. Jeff Allen seems to be a target of the refs this year. Jeff has fouled out twice this year, and many of the foul calls were questionable. It will be key for the Hokies to remain calm and keep the fouls to a minimum.
Both teams head into this game without the record they were hoping for. Purdue is clearly missing their leader and star, Robbie Hummel. Virginia Tech has had moments where they looked like a top 10 team, but with their depth issues, and inability to handle a press defense, they are very vulnerable to veteran well coached squads like Purdue. The best thing the Hokies have going for them in a red-hot Malcolm Delaney. Malcolm had 7 three pointers in the last game, and totaled 30 points. Blacksburg is one of the hardest places to play, and the Hokie faithful know whats at stake tonight. With Malcolm, the crowd, and a short week to practice up for Purdue, the Hokies win in a Cassell classic.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 72 Purdue 65
