The Sharks’ 5-3 loss to the Red Wings on Tuesday night was their 5th loss in their last 7 games. It didn’t help that their defense is just about as banged up as LA King Kevin Westgarth’s face after fighting John Scott of the Blackhawks the other night – Niclas Wallin, Kent Huskins, and Jason Demers were out with injuries, Justin Braun and Mike Moore were recalled from Worcester to fill the void (kinda).
Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk put on a show at HP Pavillion, often exploiting the positioning of the young defensemen and their mistakes that contributed to the loss. Now the Sharks will go on a five-game road-trip while sitting at 12th in the Conference and at the bottom of their division. If I’m GM Doug Wilson, I’m shopping for options to make my blue-line better.
Thursday will feature the much anticipated return for Dany Heatley to Ottawa to face his former club. Expect boo’s. A lot of them. It’s very important the Sharks capitalize on the recent struggles for the Senators as they are 3-7-0 in their last ten games. While it’s not quite time to hit the panic button, we’re at about the quarter-mark of the regular season so accumulating points on this road trip will be very important to keep pace with the herd.
After Ottawa, the Sharks will face a very strong Canadiens team before reuniting with the Wings in Detroit. Contributions from their depth lines will be crucial as the team still struggles to find consistency.
