Wizards Still Winless on Road, Playoff Hopes Fading Fast

It was a pathetic display Wednesday night by the Washington Wizards, trailing by 22 points at halftime to the Toronto Raptors, and really never putting up much of a fight. The numbers are embarrassing. Toronto shot 58% from the field, including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc. The Raptors out-rebounded the Wizards 52 to 30, and seven Toronto players scored in double-figures. Although I was one of the few people who thought the Wizards were capable of the sixth, seventh or eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, but it’s obvious barring a major u-turn this Washington team will have plenty of free time this summer.

There is a laundry list of problems facing this Wizards team. Multiple injuries to John Wall and Gilbert Arenas has hurt the team’s chemistry, and other than Nick Young the bench has been a disaster. JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche are playing too many minutes and the small forward position is still a crucial weak point. Al Thornton was hot and cold when healthy, and Josh Howard is still recovering from his ACL injury. The defense has been poor (104.8 ppg allowed) and they rank 25th in the NBA in field goal percentage (.445%) and rebounding (39.9 rpg). Basically, find a statistic that isn’t offensive rebounding (thanks to McGee), and the Wizards probably rank in the bottom third of the league. For some reason Flip Saunders doesn’t seem to be mentioned when it comes to coaches on the hot seat, but Flip had better do something soon to turn this team around because right now his team seems lost. I’ve said it plenty of times before, but this end of the year schedule for the Wiz is extremely difficult, and it will be a miracle if they win more than four or five games.
