Raider Week Preview
Posted By Jeff Burke On Dec 3 2010 @ 1:57 pm In San Diego Chargers | 1 Comment
I’m going to start off by saying, if Richard Seymour lays one finger on Philip Rivers, he will have to deal with me. The hated Raiders will come to San Diego this Sunday to face the revamped Chargers team. For the Raiders this is a must win game. If they have any chance of making the playoffs this year, they have to win this game. The Chargers should expect nothing but the Raiders best they have for 60 minutes. The Raiders pulled out their first victory against the Bolts in a long time back in week 5 at Oakland. We know the Chargers players and fans have that game fresh on their mind. The Chargers can use this to really come out strong, with plenty of fire and passion this week. Of course in a home game and later in the season the Chargers should look a lot better this time around. (They better!) The Raiders are really only good at two aspects of the game. They run the ball well on offense and they are good against the pass on defense. There is an easy recipe for success in beating the Raiders. If the Chargers get out on top and force the Raiders to play from behind they are a very beatable team. With a lead the Chargers will force the Raiders to throw the ball more and run less, this is not what the Raiders want to do. The Raiders defense ranks 5th against the pass and 28th against the run. It will be nice to get out on top and feed the ball to Tolbert and Mathews to finish the game.
The Chargers will have Mathews back in action this week. Tolbert and Mathews should be sharing carries, but with Tolbert having a bruised hand, Mathews might end up getting more carries then expected in his first game back from his ankle injury. As we have seen over the last few weeks on defense the Chargers can really get after the QB and cause some turnovers. Of course this is a big part of why the Bolts have been winning of late. The Raiders are definitely a team that the Chargers can take advantage of, when it comes to turning the ball over. It isn’t as easy as in the past with Jarmarcus Russell but the Raiders are still prone to make some big mistakes. One thing I would like the Chargers to improve on from last week, and really scares me, was the inability to put the ball in the end zone. Nate Kaeding was 5-5 in field goals last week which is good but the Chargers need to put up TD’s. We scored 36 against Indy but it easily could have been 48, if the Chargers got in the end zone and not have settled for field goals. It didn’t matter much last week but this is something that could come back and really hurt the Chargers, as we have seen in the past, during the playoffs.
Weekly Prediction- Chargers 31 Raiders 13
Season Prediction- 10-6
Side Note- If you see a large Raider fan crying in the View section 22, that is my buddy “Fat Cat”. Go ahead and rub it in and tell him he is living in the wrong city and wrong decade!
