Rangers, Gaborik send Islanders back to their losing ways

Back in the day the rivalry between the New York Islanders and the New York Rangers was something special.
These days, the Islanders are just looking to work their way out of the NHL basement. After scoring their first win in 14 games last week with a victory over New Jersey, New York was sent back to its losing ways Thursday night, a 6-5 loss to the Rangers on Long Island. The two skate again tonight at Madison Square Garden.
Marian Gaborik had a hat trick for New York, as the Rangers avenged a loss on Long Island back in October (6-4). The win was the Rangers’ fifth victory in seven games, despite blowing a pair of two-goal leads.
Gaborik, who registered his second hat trick of the season, gave the Rangers a 6-5 advantage with 5:25 remaining after Michael Grabner and Blake Comeau tallied 1:41 apart to get the Islanders even.
Zenon Konopka, Matt Moulson and Rob Schremp also registered goals for the Islanders (5-13-5), while goalie Rick DiPietro turned away 20 shots.
“It’s brutal,” DiPietro told the Associated Press afterward. “Every time we sized the momentum, there was a breakdown and they capitalized on it.”
The way the season is going for the four-time Stanley Cup champs, brutal may be a kind thing to say before all is said and done.
