One of my favourite quotes is from Harry Neale. While he was coaching the Vancouver Canucks in the early ’80′s, he said about his team’s woes, ” We couldn’t win on the road. We couldn’t win at home. My failure as a coach was not being able to find anywhere else to play.”
Right about now, it seems the Stars could play on the moon and it wouldn’t matter to them. Currently on a five game winning streak with three of those wins on the road, it wouldn’t make a difference to them. At home or on the road, Lehtonen or Raycroft, they’re winning.
Their last loss was on November 22nd where they were embarrassed 4-1 by the lowly Leafs in Toronto. They then rattled off a 2-1 win in Ottawa, both one goal games in a home and home vs St.Louis, a convincing 4-1 win in Carolina, and now a 2-1 victory at home against Ovechkin and co with Andrew Raycroft between the pipes. No, they haven’t missed a beat in the five games no matter where they’ve played since that game in Toronto. Maybe getting embarrassed by the Leafs was the perfect kick in the pants.
Amazingly, you don’t have to look all that far back to find the last five game winning streak for the Stars. The last time they pulled off the feat was between January 21st and February 3rd of ’09. But don’t compare that Stars squad to this one. That Stars team was out of the playoffs at the time and had too many issues. Though the obvious ownership issue off the ice with this year’s version, on the ice it seems there are none.
They’re playing as a unit and putting themselves in position to have things go their way rather then ending up with the short end of the stick like the past two seasons. The goaltending has been pretty solid for the most part, the guys who are suppose to score are scoring, and every night somebody seems to step up and makes a play wether it’s Jamie Benn, Steve Ott, or Brandon Segal in tonight’s game vs the Caps.
The Stars are currently in first place in the Pacific with a two point lead over the Coyotes with a game in hand. They trail Detroit by three points for tops in the West and only four teams in the East have more points but the Stars have played two to three games less then any of the four.
The team is officially on a roll and a positive attitude goes a long way.
Next up : Saturday at home vs the Wild
