Flyers top Islanders 3-2, keep New York in losing woes

Winning once every few weeks in any major sports is not going to get it done. In fact, it can get coaches fired and players benched or traded.

After snapping a 14-game winless streak a week ago this past Friday, the New York Islanders are once again caught up in a new losing streak.

Sunday afternoon’s 3-2 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Long Island was New York’s third straight in the last four days. Can you say new winless streak?

With the Islanders holding a rare lead in the third period, Philadelphia battled back, with Danny Briere tallying the tiebreaking goal with just under six minutes remaining for the victory. The win was Philadelphia’s third straight in three games against New York this season.

The Islanders, sporting a league-worst 15 points on the season, grabbed a 2-1 lead on third period tallies from P.A. Parenteau and Frans Nielsen in under a minute, but could not hold the advantage.

Once again, goalie Dwayne Roloson kept New York in the contest (24 saves), but it was not enough to prevent the Islanders from losing their 17th out of the last 18 games.

“Same old story, we have to find a way to win these games,” interim coach Jack Capuano told the New York Daily News afterwards. “Losing is unacceptable. Somehow, some way, we have to find a way. They’re professionals, they play in the best league in the world and they have to figure it out.”

Perhaps the Islanders can figure it out Thursday evening (Dec. 9) when they travel to Boston for their next game versus the Bruins?
