Raiders vs. Chargers Preview

The Oakland Raiders take on the San Diego Chargers in Qualcomm Stadium in a pivotal AFC West game. The Raiders beat the Chargers 35 -27 in week 5 snapping a 13-game winning streak against their rival. Oakland is 3-0 in the division and must find a way to slow down the resurgence of the Chargers if they plan to legitimately contend for a playoff berth. Here are three keys to winning Sunday’s ball game.

Offensive consistency will be instrumental for Oakland as they face a red hot Chargers offense led by MVP candidate Philip Rivers. The Chargers post the #1 ranked offense in the league, so the Raiders have to stay close stride for stride. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson must dial up an efficient game plan to have a chance come the 4th quarter. Quarterback Jason Campbell steps in for an injured Bruce Gradkowski, and looks to get his rhythm back, while Run DMC (Darren McFadden) looks to regain his Pro Bowlesque form as the Raiders desperately need him to get going on offense, because he is there foundation.

Defensively, this game will be a challenge as the Raiders are ranked 5th against the pass and look to slow down Rivers, who’s red hot ¬†as of late. The defense has spent to much time on the field, mainly due to inconsistency by the offense. In Sunday’s matchup, it is key that the Raiders get off the field on 3rd down. They gave up over 20 first downs in last week’s ball game against Miami, and that just won’t cut it when you are playing an explosive offense. Contain Rivers and Co. and you have a solid chance of snapping your 2-game losing streak.

Staying focused will be huge come Sunday afternoon. Oakland has to play hard for 60 minutes. No bonehead mistakes in crucial situations. The Silver and Black must remain discipline on offense and defense. The Raiders are notoriously known for penalties, and need to have a clean game if they expect to get the “W” against their division rival.

Today’s ball game is the first pressure type of game the Raiders have played in eight years. Can coach Cable lead Oakland to a season sweep of the Chargers? We know that the Raiders will play hard, but do they have the fortitude to win a big ball game when it counts the most? I guess Raider Nation will find out come Sunday evening. This should be interesting!
