The Buffalo Bills enter today’s game with an even worse record than the Vikings 4-7 mark. At 2-9 they may not seem like a dangerous team, but Minnesota should not take them lightly. After opening the season 0-8, the Bills won two in a row, then came within one play of beating Pittsburgh last week. Besides, the Vikings have had trouble with all kinds of teams this year.
Injuries will be a factor for the Vikes offense today. Adrian Peterson(ankle) will play, but expect to see a lot of Toby Gerhardt as AD’s plays will probably be limited today. The biggest news this morning is that Minnesota will be without the services of Percy Harvin(illness). The diverse talents of Mr. Harvin will be missed in both the running and passing aspects of the offense. I expect the same type of offense that we saw last week against Washington; conservative, efficient, and mistake free.
The biggest key to Minnesota winning back-to-back games for the first time this year will be the play of the defense and special teams. The Viking D has to contain the prolific passing of Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. There’s a sentence I never thought I’d hear, much less write, but he has looked very good overall and has thrown for nearly 600 yards during the past two weeks. Minnesota’s front seven needs to be on point as well. Fred Jackson(RB) has been averaging 4.4 this season and looks better every week. Special teams might be the most important part of the game today. The Vikings gave up two big returns last week to the Redskins. That second return would have cost Minnesota the game if not for a penalty. Buffalo certainly has the ability to break off a big return. Leodis McKelvin(CB) had a huge game last week averaging over 26 yards per return. If Minnesota wants to make Leslie Frazier 2-0 as a head coach, they will have to execute better than they have been defending returns. I expect a very close game. Vikings 23-Bills 20.
