WHAT IT MEANS: December 5, 2010

Here’s this week’s What It Means after a fantastic Sunday outside of LA:
Graeme McDowell Beating Tiger Woods at the Chevron World Challenge: What more can you say? GMac has put himself up in the top echelon of golfers in 2010, once again proving that he can beat the best on the biggest stage.
Most impressive to me was the bogey on 17. After hitting it in the hay behind the green, he took an unplayable and chose to go all the way behind the green to the 9th tee box. He then hit a spectacular pitch shot, and made the bogey putt to only let Tiger tie it up and not take the lead. He subsequently birdied the 18th twice, first in regulation and then the ultimate winning putt in the playoff. Great, great stuff.
Tiger Woods Finishing 2nd in the Chevron: Tiger hates to lose. He won’t be happy for about the next 24 hours. But I think after the emotion passes he’ll look back on this being a big week for him. The new swing got him into a great position to win and ultimately to have its first test under pressure. It cracked a little bit — especially during the middle part of the round — but it’s just another step in the process for getting yourself comfortable under a new swing. It was completely and utterly normal that it did. Ingrain that into your head because you will read other sports writers try to tell you otherwise. Not true.
I see this as a launching pad for Tiger into Torrey Pines and the rest of the 2011 season.
Also, this was the new putter’s first round in a pressure spot and it helped him make some clutch par putts during that erratic middle part of the round. With the missed putt on 18 in the playoff — hey, it happens. Even the best don’t make every, single, solitary putt. At least Tiger gave it a shot to go in.
