Wings Lose In Overtime To Kings

The Detroit Red Wings played a solid game on Saturday night, but it was ultimately not enough as the Los Angeles Kings defeated them 3-2 in  overtime.

Jonathan Ericsson opened up the scoring with 4:31 left in the first when he slapped home his second goal of the season. The Wings outplayed the Kings for much of the first period, and it looked like it could be a long night for the team in black.

The Kings came out in the second period playing hard. It paid off just 24 seconds into the period when Kings forward  Justin Williams tipped the puck past Chris Osgood to tie the game. Todd Bertuzzi answered just 48 seconds later when he beat Kings goalie Jonathan Quick glove side to give the Wings back the lead. The Kings continued to push, and defenseman Alec Martinez blasted a shot past Osgood to tie the game, and finish off the scoring in regulation.

With just 56 second left in the overtime period, Martinez deflected a pass from Niklas Lidstrom to Kings captain Dustin Brown who fed Anze Kopitar for the game winning shot. It was Kopitar’s tenth goal of the season, and his ninth shot of the game.

Despite losing Osgood looked sharp in goal after being out for over a month with a groin injury. He last started on October 30th, and stopped 22 shots tonight. He made some timely stops, and the Kings first two goals were scored on deflections in front of Osgood. He is now 2-2-1 on the season.

The Kings continued their home penalty kill streak. They have not allowed a power play goal at home this season in 12 home games, and have killed 43 penalties in that time. The Wings were 0-2 on the power play tonight with five shots.

Kris Draper also returned to the Wings line-up tonight, but only played five minutes. It was his first time on the ice this season after abdominal surgery.

The Wings return home for a game against the San Jose Sharks on Monday night. The puck will drop at 7:30 EST at Joe Louis Arena.
