Power Outage: Isles Cant Hold On Vs Flyers, Fall 3-2

The Islanders were 14:12 from beating the Philadelphia Flyers, but what is a quick break for most people was an eternity for the young Isles, who couldn’t hold on, falling to the Flyers 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum.

Andreas Nodl tied the game at 11:34 of the third period on the power play, and Daniel Briere’s 14th goal of the season at 14:16 of the third period sent the Isles to their third straight loss.  The Isles have now dropped 17 of their last 18 games.

Despite yet another loss, the Islanders played the Flyers tough throughout.  The Flyers got off to an early 1-0 lead, on Matt Carle’s first goal of the season at 13:12 of the first period.   The Islanders, however,  turned the momentum in the second period, when they outshot the Flyers 15-9 but could not get one past Flyers G Sergei Bobrovsky.

In the third period, the Isles finally broke through, when Jon Sim got credited with his first goal of the year when P.A. Parenteau’s shot deflected off his skate at 5:12.  Just 36 seconds later, Frans Nielsen gave the Isles their first lead of the game with his third goal of the year.

However, the Isles couldn’t hold the lead, as Nodl scored on the power play, after Matt Moulson was sent off for holding.  After Briere gave the Flyers the lead at 3-2, the Isles would get one more power play opportunity to tie the game when Ville Leino was called for tripping at 15:51, but the Isles power play was powerless yet again.  The Isles failed to score on the late power play chance, and were 0-4 on the power play for the game.

“We have to find a way to win,” said Islanders coach Jack Capuano. “Roli played well and he gave us a chance to win. We just didn’t take advantage of that.”

Frustration has clearly set it on Long Island, and the team will have a few days to cool off before its next game.  In the meantime, Capuano continues to try different combinations looking for something to spark this team and its dormant power play, and get it back in the win column.

The Islanders next game is Thursday, when the team travels to Boston to take on the Bruins at 7pm.

Plus/Minus: Minus- After going 0-4 on Power Play yesterday, Islanders are now 0-36 on power play over their last 11 games.  Plus: Isles wore their white jerseys at home for second time this year. Minus: Attendance for the game was only 7,773.  Plus – Roloson played well again, making 24 saves.  He continues to build trade value.
