Jets Destroyed by Pats

A memo to Rex Ryan and the New York Jets:  Teams that are destined to win the Super Bowl do not get obliterated on Monday Night Football by their hated rivals in a game to determine ownership of their conference.

In a one-sided contest that recalled the darkest days of the franchise, Gang Green was humilated by the New England Patriots and surrendered first place in the AFC East.  Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns to pace the home team to victory.

From the opening kickoff, it was quite apparent that this night was fated to end in disaster for New York.   New England built a 17 point lead before Nick Folk kicked a 39 yard field goal early in the second quarter.  Virtually anything the Jets attempted to do in a productive manner crashed and burned in bizarre fashion.

Brady had no such worries.  He picked apart the Jets’ previously vaunted defense with casual aplomb, completing passes to eight different receivers.   Danny Woodhead, the cast-off who was cut from the Jets in August, slashed through the secondary on a 50 yard completion.  Deion Branch made the entire New York defense look silly when he scored the Patriots’ second touchdown.

Brady’s counterpart, Mark Sanchez, endured one of the worst performances of his young career, tossing three interceptions and scrambling for his life all night long.

The Jets play another rival this week in the Miami Dolphins, a downtrodden team who wouldn’t hesitate to put a hurting on an already wounded New York squad.  Rex Ryan is known for his cocky demeanor and his entertaining sound bites, but he is charged with the task of rallying his abused players and getting them back in a winning mode.  If they don’t take the field against the Dolphins ready to achieve redemption, then Ryan will have fallen short of his responsibility.

It’s going to take a huge effort to make everyone forget what transpired on that cold night in Foxboro.  If the Jets don’t muster it up, all that Super Bowl talk will leave an awful lot of egg on their leader’s face.
