Bulls Lose A Close One

For the second year in a row Connecticut’s kicker Dave Teggart hit the game winner. Last year in Hartford, he beat South Florida as time expired. This year he kicked it from 52 yards out with 17 seconds left in the game and it gave the Huskies a 19-16 win over the South Florida Bulls. UConn won their first ever Big East title and a first ever trip to a BCS bowl, and they’ll be playing the Big 12 champs the Oklahoma Sooners in Glendale, Az. in The Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2011. Connecticut ( 8-4, 5-2 in Big East play ) won the tiebreaker with West Virginia and Pittsburgh, the Huskies beat both the Mountaineers and Panthers in Hartford earlier in the season.
True Freshman walk-on quarterback and Tampa native Bobby Eveld rallied the Bulls in the 4th quarter, the Bulls once trailed by ten points in the final quarter. Bulls first year head coach Skip Holtz said ” this one hurts”. Holtz wanted to send out his seniors with a win in their final home game and it also would have improved the Bulls bowl chances. South Florida ( 7-5, but they finished 3-4 in Big East play ) This game sums up the Bulls season, the offense struggled most of the game and the “D” carried the team. UConn only had 232 total yards and the Bulls defense also contained the league’s top runner Jordan Todman to 93 yards on 33 carries. The Bulls defense even forced Todman to fumble in the 4th quarter, and that would set up a Eveld to Dontavia Bogan 28 yard touchdown pass, Bogan was several seniors playing in their final home game.
Next Up For The Bulls: A Big East vs ACC Match-up. South Florida takes on Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. A place where the Bulls are familiar with, they played their first ever bowl game against N.C. State in Charlotte back in 2005, losing 14-0. The Bulls are looking for a different result this time around.
Why The BCS Stinks: Is UConn the worst team to ever play in a BCS Bowl? Raise your hand if you think the Huskies deserve to be in a BCS Bowl? I don’t see any hands raised outside of the Hartford area. West Virginia is the only team that is ranked in the Big East, how pathetic is that? I believe if your not ranked in the top 15, you don’t deserve to be going to a BCS Bowl. Clearly the system stinks for various reasons. Remember back in the day when you played on New Year’s day you actually were one of the best teams in the nation, those days are long gone. An unranked team playing in one of the major bowls, clearly the system has failed….again!
