Lakers-Clippers Preview (Dec. 8)

The Los Angeles Clippers will be going for their sixth win of the season Wednesday night as the defending-champion Lakers “come to town.”

Considering the teams share the same arena, the Lakers shouldn’t feel too uncomfortable as they don the road purples at Staples Center.

However, taking down the 5-17 Clippers won’t be as easy as it may seem.

All of the five wins for the Clips this season have come on their home floor, and, they appear to have developed an early-season knack for stepping up their play against teams in the upper echelon of the league.

The Lakers would certainly qualify for such a status, and the Clippers were able to snap a nine-game losing streak to their in-town rivals last season, as they took two of the four games.

The Lakers hold a gaudy advantage in the all-time head-to-head series 138-47.

A big key for the Clippers will be trying to keep the Lakers’ revamped bench off the scoreboard.

The Lakers were able to upgrade their backups over the summer, adding veterans Matt Barnes and Steve Blake via free agency. The drastic offensive improvement of Shannon Brown has also provided a major boost.

The reserves have been held in check (for the most part) during each of the Lakers’ six losses, while Clippers backups like Ryan Gomes, Rasual Butler and Baron Davis have been essential to the Clippers having won four of their last eight games.

The Clips will also need to use their youth and athleticism to their advantage.

With the Lakers coming off of a hard-fought victory over Washington last night, the Clippers should be looking to push the pace with Eric Bledsoe and Blake Griffin. You may have heard of him.

In each of the Clippers’ five wins, they’ve been downright dominant in terms of points in the paint. Gaining an advantage in that aspect tonight will be a tall order with Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom patrolling that area.

The Clippers will be without Chris Kaman and Brian Cook for the second consecutive game, while Baron Davis is a game-time decision following a hamstring injury suffered in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s win over Sacramento.
