Spartans Headed to Capital One Bowl

Michigan State made a bowl game for the 4th year in a row, as they will be heading to Orlando, Florida to play in the Capital One Bowl on January 1st for the 2nd time in four years. It should be a great matchup, in which the Spartans will be tested against the defending National Champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide. This game will provide MSU with several opportunities, including: getting a gauge as to how good this team really is, proving themselves on national television against one of the most storied programs in the history of college football, gaining momentum for next year if they were to beat a “superior” SEC team, and sticking it to Nick Saban, who bolted from East Lansing for the next best thing (LSU), not even staying to coach the Spartans in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day in 2000. It was a very cowardly move, one that showed how disloyal Saban is and has been, and one that Spartan fans have never, and will never, forget.

Somehow Alabama is favored by eleven and a half points, even though the Big Ten Conference was clearly the best in the nation this year. The conference finished with 3 teams in the top seven of the BCS standings, sending two of those teams to BCS Bowls and the third to a New Year’s Day bowl game. Wisconsin finished 4th in the BCS and will play in the Rose Bowl, while Ohio State finished 6th, and will play in the Sugar Bowl. I hate to bring this up again, but State got screwed, as they finished 7th in the BCS, but were unable to secure a BCS bowl because three teams from one conference are not allowed in, even if they may be amongst the best seven teams in the country. Instead, we have an 8-4 Connecticut team (no disrespect to the Huskies, you earned it by winning the brutal gauntlet that is the Big East) who will be playing in the BCS Fiesta Bowl, rather than an 11-1 Big Ten Champion Michigan State team. I hope that MSU comes out with a chip on their shoulder as a result of this ridiculous system that is in place and takes it to an Alabama team that comes from a conference that is over-rated this year.
