When a guy looks to get into a relationship, they look for their significant other to have similar interests to theirs. Going to the movies, having a good sense of humor, music taste, liking the same restaurants and the love of sports are some of the criteria that I go off of. I consider myself lucky to have these in common with my girlfriend Courtney. Well, all except one…..SHE HATES SPORTS!! She’s a girl that smiled when I said there may be a lockout which means no football on Sundays. During the Steelers and Ravens game this past Sunday, the most entertaining thing to her was Troy Polamalu’s Head And Shoulder’s commercial.
Things changed on Monday night when I took her to her first ever hockey game to see the Penguins take on the Devils. At first, it was the same old “how long is this”, “do they have popcorn” and “who are they playing?” By the end of the game it was “that’s 5 minutes for fighting right”, “i really like this and want to go again”, and my favorite “I think I want a jersey.” When I asked who, she simply said, “that Crosby guy was really, really good.”
If Sidney Crosby impresses someone who never watched hockey before, then how is he viewed by the people who actually do watch? This guy should replace Chris Pine and star along side Denzel Washington in the movie ‘Unstoppable’, because that is exactly what he’s been. Going into Thursday’s game, he has has a 16 game point streak (including two hat tricks during that time), leads the league in points scored, has the most votes for the all-star game in the league and is the main reason for the teams 10 game winning streak, their longest since 1993 when they won 17 straight. In fact, they are 12-0-1 and a Marc Staal short handed goal away from being winners of 13 straight.
As NHL fans, especially Pens fans, we need to appreciate this streaks by the Pens and Sid. One month ago, everyone was asking what is wrong with this team as they had early season struggles especially with injuries and the play of Marc-Andre Fleury. Where are the people who were calling for Fleury’s job at now that he is red hot? He is playing some of his best hockey of his career for the NHL best Penguins. With adjustments to the Defensive pairings and the health issues straightening out, Fleury is back to form. As soon as the Pens lose a couple of games in a row, I’m sure the Anti-Fleury Group will be back in action calling for Brent Johnson to play the rest of the year.
Maybe the most impressive part of the Penguins play lately, is the fact that they are winning without Jordan Staal and Evgeni Malkin. Malkin has missed the past few games with injury, but hasn’t been scoring the way we are used to. Prior to injury, he led the league in shots on goal, so when they start finding the net, look out. Having Staal as his Center when he comes back, will only benefit Geno even more.
We can’t take for granted the type of player Pittsburgh has in Sid, but sometimes I feel as if we do. He makes plays that we only see in video games. All I ask is when this streak ends, when Sid cools down and when Fleury lets in an ‘easy goal’, don’t bash them. Feel privileged that we are able to witness the leagues best team and with all due respect to Steve Stamkos and Alex Ovechkin, the best player on Earth.
