While the No. 5 Badgers are gearing up for the Rose Bowl on January 1 at 4:00 against No. 3 TCU, they are also taking care of business off the field on the recruiting trail. Wisconsin continues to pursue the trio of Florida prospects from Dwyer High but received some bad news when tight end Nick O’Leary dropped UW from his top five. It has been rumored the trio would like to play college ball together but it’s looking more and more like they will go separate ways. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett recently met with UW coaches down in Florida and continues to be Wisconsin’s number one target.
Offensive lineman Spencer Region from Cullman, Alabama is a mammoth prospect sitting at 6’6″, 330 pounds and has Wisconsin on his short list along with Georgia, Alabama and LSU. This would be a huge get for the Badgers as their current class has a lot of skill players and not a lot of O-Linemen.
On the negative side of recruiting, the Badgers recently had 2 de-commitments. Athlete Makinton Dorleant from Naples, Florida is out of the mix for the Badgers. Also out is Texas cornerback prospect Bennett Okotcha who de-committed from Wisconsin and gave Notre Dame a verbal commitment.
Several Badgers are being honored by being nominee’s for some big-time national awards. Scott Tolzien took it a step further when he recently won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. It’s the first time in the history of Wisconsin football that a Badger has won the award which recognizes the country’s top senior quarterback. Lance Kendricks, Gabe Carimi and John Clay are also up for awards which will be revealed tonight on ESPN’s award show. Kendricks is a finalist for the John Mackey Award, given to the best tight end in the nation. Carimi is a finalist for the Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the best interior lineman in the nation. Clay is a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, despite missing significant time with a knee injury late in the season. It is an award given to the nation’s best running back.
That’s it for now, I’ll keep giving updates on the awards and recruiting til the Badgers square off with the Horned Frogs in the Grandaddy of them all in Pasadena on New Years Day.
