EMU Looking for Help!

YPSILANTI, Mich. — If you listen carefully you can hear the screaming crashing of the 2010-11 Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball season as it explodes into an unrecognizable mess.
The Eastern Michigan University first eight games of the season against NCAA schools have one thing in common – the Eagles have lost those contests but the only win was a nine-point victory against NAIA member Madonna University.
“I do not think the effort was what it should have been,” Eastern Michigan Unversity basket ball coach Charles Ramsey said after the 79-70 victory. “I do not think the attiude was what it should have been. We are not good enough to play that way, trust me!”
The non-Mid-American Conference schedule will be complete Tuesday night January 4, 2011 against divison 2 school from the state of Michigan, Ferris State University but the question about the quality and depth of the talent of this team will still not be clear.
After the first game against Michigan State University at Breslin Arena, coach Ramsey simply said, the better team won and the other players were going to have to step up and give power forward Brandon Bowdry some help, he scored 32 points against the Spartans.
Bowdry does have some mighty broad shoulders as he picks up and places the Eagles upon his back, he is averaging 20.5 points per game and pulling down nine rebounds but sometime Bowdry plays at a very high emotion.
“I exert all of my emotion on the court,” Bowdry said. “I look forward to being the bully on the court. I am an all-around player. Things you want to do – I do!”
Michigan State University basketball coach Tom Izzo said after the 30 point win, his team probably would not have to play against another player like Bowdry for the rest of the season.
Ramsey is looking for a couple intangable ingredients for his squad – chemistry and a team’s personality, Bowdry provides the emotion lift for the Eagles but Ramsey is looking toward the rest of the Eagles for help.
The Eastern Michigan roster contains seven players that have started their college careers elsewhere including five players from the ranks of junior college.
At the beginning of the season the Eagles were looking for a point guard and Ramsey went out and got Darrell Lampley a junior college transfer and Derek Thompson who came to Eastern Michigan University from Southeast Missouri State University.
Lamphley is leading the Eagles with 3.5 assist and is contributing seven points, his team mate Thompson who is a transfer from Southeast Missouri State University is also scoring an average of 7.3 points but he also committed eight turnovers in the young season.
Ramsey is also looking toward two veterans from last year’s team, Jay Higgins and Jamell Harris to lend a helping hand to Bowdry and lifting the Eagles.
Higgins is a forward that understands the offense but is still looking for his scoring touch from the perimeter he is only averaging three points and sometimes he just seems to disappear from the floor.
Harris against Madonna University set a Convocation Center record by blocking seven shots and for the first time in his career at Eastern Michigan he recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds but the talent that Madonna University provides is different, too many times against NCAA opponents Harris makes turnovers and misses too many shots under the basket.
The mistakes and miscues from Harris and the lack of production cause the Eagles to play out of control on offense and in transition the defense is caught out of position.
Ramsey and the Eagles have three weeks before the opening of the Mid-American Conference against the University of Toledo at the home of the Rockets, Savage Hall, Saturday January 8, 2011 the tip off is schedule for 8 p.m.
Saturday afternoon the bragging rights to the city of Detroit basketball will once again be determen on the basketball court as the Eagles host the University of Detroit at the frendliest basketball arena in the Mid-American Conference the Convocation Center.
The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
Eastern Michigan University basketball fans are hoping that the Eagles find the chemistry and the swagger of a basketball team that has the character to show up for the league games and mean business but if they do not find these qualities Ramsey and the Eagles will hear Eagle fans screaming out of frustration.
