Alexei Kovalev needs to be loved. What a surprise. Apparently, the star centre has claimed that he is a scapegoat for the slumping Senators team and that Cory Clouston is being unfair to him, moving him to the fourth line and severely reducing his ice time. Yes, because Kovalev’s done so much for the team thus far and we should all recognize him and give him all the ice time that he desires.
There was a collective laugh in Montreal when Ottawa signed Kovalev and nobody probably laughed harder than Bob Gainey, who had already tried numerous tactics to make the star centre grow up. He tried it all. The man to man talk, the long walks, the time in the press box, moving him to the fourth line…he probably tried everything short of emotional blackmail, and would anyone have really been surprised had he tried that one too?
For my money, I’d give Jesse Winchester more time on the ice. He’s the kind of player that I like to see. Hard-nosed, grinding, getting into the dirty areas, giving out hits, taking hits, and charging the net regardless of who’s in it. Fight and determination are going to win you more games than mood-swinging divas.
At this rate, Kovalev is going to go the way of Dany Heatley, claiming that he needed a change and all he ever wanted was a fair shake when the rest of the city knows better. I’m guessing the city will not be sad the day that they wave bye bye to Kovy. Just another jersey to toss.
