Giants Path to Victory Goes Through KC Airport

The Giants are stranded tonight in the Kansas City airport after two feet of snow prevented their scheduled landing in Minnesota this morning.  Big Blue will be forced to do their run through in an airplane hangar, eat barbecue sandwiches and hopefully fly tomorrow morning, hours before their 1 PM kickoff with the Vikings.  Like any experienced business traveler, the Giants aren’t gonna let a little snow or a sleepover in an airport divert their attention from the job at hand.

If anything, I see the Giants arriving in Minneapolis a more cohesive unit, with their sense of camaraderie stoked by the unusual disruption of their normal pre-game routine.  Lord knows complacency has not been a good thing for this football team.  So maybe  a night in the KC airport is just what this team needs.  If it were a sports movie you know the teammates would gather round telling stories like they were at a sleepover party, breaking down barriers and getting real with one another.  While the picture I’m painting may be a little exaggerated compared to real life, there does seem to be an air of good spirits evident from the waylaid Giants.

Per Justin Tuck, on his cell phone to ESPN, the Giants will have a good walk through in that hangar.  ESPN’s sweeping assessment that the Giants are in “good spirits” because of the free barbecue sandwiches they scored in the airport does seem a little silly however.  These guys can afford their own barbecue, I don’t think a free sandwich could have that much of an impact in their world.  But if the guys are laughing, if they’re seeing the humor in their situation, putting things in perspective, and rallying together as a unit, maybe the free sandwiches do have them in a good mood.

Another reason for happy thoughts is the prospect of receivers Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks returning to the lineup tomorrow.  Both are listed as questionable coming into game day.  What a nice boost if these weapons can return to the arsenal.

Can you believe this will be Eli Manning’s 100th consecutive start at QB?  Ironically it could come as Brett Favre finally relinquishes his ironman streak of 298 straight games, as a shoulder injury could hold Brett out tomorrow.   At first glance you’d think there was no comparison between these two quarterbacks.  But each have one Super Bowl title under their belt, and while Brett has the passing records he also has his prima donna behavior and his naughty texts to Jenn Sterger on his permanent record.  Eli does not have the flash of Favre or the talent, but given Favre’s negatives and Eli’s exemplary team-first behavior, how big is the gap really?
