Rangers Capitalize After Nash-ty Loss

The Great 8 was no match for the lucky seven string of goals. Or Brandon Dubinsky.
The New York Rangers dominated the Washington Capitals tonight 7-0 handing the Caps their sixth straight loss. Marc Staal and Dan Girardi shutdown Alexander Ovechkin and Co. while Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 31 shots for his fifth shutout this season.
Staal showed his offensive upside again when he slipped one pass Semyon Varlamov after jumping up the ice with Brian Boyle for a 2-on-1 while shorthanded.
Last night in Columbus, Lundqvist let in a soft goal by Rick Nash who threw it at the net from behind in the last five minutes of the game. Nash sent another nail in the coffin goal Lundqvist’s way as he was shuffling back to the net after initially heading to the bench for an extra man. The tight 1-1 game suddenly became a 3-1 heartbreaker and lost points.
Tonight, the King was cool, calm and collected as the Caps kept ringin’ em off the post.
The blue collar homegrown Blueshirts were the real stars of tonight’s game though. Artem Anisimov was bumped back to his original linemates of Dubsinky and Ryan Callahan after coach Tortorella had demoted him for his lackluster play.
Anisimov got the second period scoring frenzy started while Ryan Callahan netted the last two goals of the night to finish the Caps off.
Dubinsky had a “Gordie Howe” hat trick with a goal, an assist and a scrap with Ovechkin that got the Garden rocking. The two chirped at each other after the first period buzzer sounded. Once OV landed a monster hip check on Girardi in the second, the gloves went flying.
The line looked as impressive as it did at the start of the season with its strong cycling in the zone and gritty forecheck. The Rangers need the Dubi-Anisimov-Callahan line to consistently set the tone…and perhaps generate a cool nickname. They’re not the flashy GAG line (goal-a-game) but they bring a spark and level of passion that Ranger fans have been craving.
The game showed what the Rangers would look like if they “brought it” for sixty minutes. Bring it, and the wins will come. Check, skate, battle, grind, shoot, block are the verbs of success.
The Capitals have lost their mojo for the time being and the Rangers took advantage. Consistently executing on the man advantage is another story however, that requires more work. They need to string together some wins. Once Marian Gaborik really takes flight, expect a winning streak of more than every other game to develop.
