Even without a game not scheduled til the new year, the Badgers are managing to still make noise in the College Football world.
Defensive Coordinator Dave Doeren has been named head coach for Northern Illinois University. Doeren has coached at Wisconsin for five seasons, with three coming as defensive coordinator. Best of luck to Coach Doeren as he embarks on a new challenge in his life. The Badgers and Huskies are scheduled to play each other Nov. 17th of next year at Soldier Field. Doeren will coach the Badgers in the Rose Bowl on new years day.
Offensive Coordinator Paul Chryst continues to be a hot commodity in the coaching world as well. Hopefully the Big Red Machine, also known as the Badgers offense, can hang to Chryst. Losing both coordinators might be a significant blow on the recruiting trail for Bucky.
On a positive note, junior defensive end J.J. Watt has been named the Lott IMPACT Defensive Player of the Year. The award, named after Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, recognizes athletic performance and personal character. Watt filled up the stat sheet, registering 59 tackles including 21 for loss, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and three blocked kicks. Past winners of the award include David Pollack, DeMeco Ryans, Glenn Dorsey, James Laurinaitis and Jerry Hughes. Watt was recently named First Team All-Big Ten and a Second Team Walter Camp All-American.
Tackle Gabe Carimi won the Outland Trophy last Thursday at the College Football Award show. The award recognizes the top interior lineman in the country. Former Badger Joe Thomas also won the award and is now an All-Pro left tackle for the Cleveland Browns.
