Rivers, Chargers Blank Chiefs

Well if you a re a Chiefs fan then this was a game you will soon want to forget as the Sand Diego Chargers absolutely stifled the Chiefs on offense and rolled on offense. The Chargers, with the win, were able to gain ground in the AFC West race, now just one game behind Kansas City with three left to play. The Raiders also won today keeping their hopes alive as well.
Brodie Croyle had not started for the Chiefs since 2009, but it looked like it had been since 1999. Croyle never look comfortable, his pocket presence was terrible and he was unable to get the Chiefs going. Croyle went 7/17 for a mere 40 yards. Now we all knew that he was not going to be amazing, but come on. That was a pathetic effort and it seemed as if he didn’t even take a snap in practice during the week.
Jamaal Charles signed a new 5 year 32 million dollar contract in the last 48 hours, but he did not look like a man inspired by cash as he was only able to muster 40 yards on the ground. He never was able to get past the second level defense, a credit to San Diego’s D line. But, much was expected of him this week due to Matt Cassel being held out. The Chiefs offense achieved only 5 first downs the whole game. I do not care who you are, but if you only have five first downs the whole game, you will never ever win…ever.
Phillip Rivers went off after being suffocated by a Raider defense a week earlier. Rivers tossed for 226 yards and two scores, both going to Malcolm Floyd. Rivers was highly efficient completing 66% of his passes while Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert gave a steady performance on the ground, 66 and 65 yards respectively and each had a score.
The Chiefs were out gained in yardage 426 to 67. That is a pathetic statistic. For the players, having to watch this film is worse than route canal. I could barely watch all of it live, let alone on replays. The Chargers looked like they had a 5 game lead in the division going into this game instead of 2 down. This is the part of the season that will tell if the Chiefs have what it takes to make some noise in the playoffs. They are a very young team, but if they can get someleadership, they can still win this division.
The playoffs are in their own hands, they control their destiny. They simply must win out, easier said than done, but that is the case. The Chiefs remaining schedule is at St. Louis, home to Tennessee, and home to Oakland. The Chiefs must look now to the Rams and take care of business one game at a time. The Chiefs should have no problem getting motivated for this Sunday after watching today’s film. Check back later in the week for a Chief-Ram preview.
