Can We Buy a Win?

Maybe Mikhail Prokhorov should use his money to buy the New Jersey Nets a win.

New Jersey dropped their eighth straight game this one at home against the Philadelphia 76ers, 82-77. The Nets have now lost all seven games in the month of December, which sets a franchise record to start the month.

These two teams have struggled offensively all season, so the low scoring was expected. It didn’t help that Anthony Morrow injured himself during pregame warm-ups. He tried to play but was removed after about a minute of action.

The Nets couldn’t get anything going in the first half, and the 76ers were able to maintain a 6-8 point lead for most of the way.

New Jersey had their patented second half run to make the game close, cutting the lead to within three. However, Philadelphia stormed back in the blink of an eye to increase the lead back to 10. Late in third, the Nets showed more signs of life, which put them in the position to compete for a comeback win. Philadelphia kept making big shots.

Philadelphia opened another double digit lead. When all hope appeared lost, the Nets again made it interesting. Travis Outlaw hit a clutch three with 32 seconds remaining. Rather than foul, Avery Johnson opted to try for a defensive stop. Instead, Steven Graham, who already picked up a technical foul in the game, fouled Andre Iguodala with 15 seconds remaining.

Naturally, Iguodala nailed both free throws to ice the game.

Jrue Holiday and Spencer Hawes scored 19 and 18 points respectively for the 76ers. Derrick Favors recorded his second career double-double for New Jersey, with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

In other Nets news, it appears a three team trade has been agreed upon among the Nets, LA Lakers and Houston Rockets. The Nets would give up Terrence Williams and Joe Smith in exchange for Sasha Vujacic and two first round draft picks.

Maybe Vujacic can spark the struggling Nets offense?

John Wall makes his first trip to Newark as the Nets host the Washington Wizards Thursday night.
