Road To Nowhere: Isles Blanked in Nashville 5-0

Anders Lindback stopped 28 shots, and Patric Hornqvist scored twice to lead the  Predators to a 5-0 victory over the Islanders Monday evening in Nashville.

It was the second consecutive shutout for Lindback.  The Swedish rookie is 4-0-1 since taking over as the Predators’ top goalie for the injured Pekka Rinne.

Once again, the Isles would fall behind early, and special teams were their undoing.  With P.A. Parenteau in the box for tripping, Sergei Kostitsyn deflected a shot by Cody Franson past Isles G Dwayne Roloson to give the Preds a 1-0 first period lead.  The goal extended a personal best point streak for Kostitsyn to 6 games.

“The first goal was really huge,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. “If they score on the first couple of shifts there, it might be a totally different attitude. They are a young team and they have some dynamic guys like John Tavares.  We don’t know the players as well from the East, we don’t play them a lot.”

In the second, Hornqvist scored the first of his pair on the night at 5:22, after Roloson stopped a shot from the high slot from Shane O’Brien, but couldn’t control the rebound.  Hornqvist scooped up the loose puck and put it in a wide open net to give the Preds a 2-0 lead.  Just over 2 minutes later, Jerrod Smithson’s 3rd goal of the season gave the Preds a 3-0 lead, which they would take into the 3rd period.

In the 3rd, Hornqvist would get his second of the night and 8th of the season at 13:55 to extend the Preds lead to 4-0.  Nick Spaling would get his first goal of the season on the power play at 18:15 for the final margin.  It was Spaling’s first career goal after 50 NHL games.

“We had a tough night back there. I’m not going to lie to you,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. “We had a lot of giveaways, we didn’t move the puck fast enough, and we didn’t let the puck do the work. That is why in the second period, we spent most of the time in our end.”

The Islanders host the Anaheim Ducks Thursday at 7pm at the Nassau Coliseum.

PLUS/MINUS: Minus: Isles were 0-3 on the power play, which has struggled for over a month.  Plus: Islanders rookie RW Rhett Rakhshani made his NHL debut after being called up from AHL Bridgeport earlier Monday.  Minus: Isles have now lost 6 straight, and 20 of 21.  Minus: Isles are 0-15-2 in games they have trailed 1-0.
