The New King of the Slam Dunk Contest?

Orlando Magic Center Dwight Howard declares he has retired from participating in any more slam dunk contests. Although Howard is only 25 years old and has participated in three contests taking one of those titles, he has decided to hang it up. As Howard steps out of the slam dunk spotlight, who then will fill the void?

Two words: Blake Griffin.

It’s only fitting, since this year’s NBA All-Star Weekend will be in Los Angeles at the Staples Center, which is where Griffin calls home. Not to mention, Blake has quite the impressive repertoire of eye-popping and crowd-pleasing dunks which have left spectators in awe. Only a quarter through the season, ESPN Sports Center has already dedicated a top ten of entirely Blake Griffin dunks.

The monster-esque stature of the phenomenal rookie elicits memories of Dominique Wilkins - affectionately known as the “human highlight film” who brought the Atlanta Hawks two slam dunk titles, in 1985 and 1990. Well Mr. Wilkins, pass the torch to the rookie Blake Griffin because the man is earning his stripes. He has bested all stars like Amare Stoudemire, Tim Duncan, Tyreke Evans, Pau Gasol and Ben Wallace.

In addition to the eagerly-awaited participation of Blake Griffin in the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, he is also one of the four Clippers on the All-Star ballot. More importantly, Griffin is holding his own in double doubles and rebounds, only trailing Los Angeles Laker Pau Gasol and Minnesota Timberwolves Kevin Love. This rookie is turning heads and moving full speed ahead to a successful and dynamic career as he Next Big Thing in the NBA.

Blake Griffin, you are crowned the next king of cracking backboards.
