Duck Hunt: Isles Shoot Down Anaheim 3-2

The Islanders got 3 goals in a 99 second span in the first period, chasing Ducks G Curtis McElhinney from the game, and held on to beat Anaheim 3-2 last night at the Nassau Coliseum.

Rick DiPietro made 30 saves for the Isles, who won for just the 2nd time in 22 games.  However, the win hasn’t quelled all the frustration with the Isles’ enigmatic goaltender.

“It’s good that we won, but we’re not happy,” DiPietro said. “When we win 10 in a row, then we’ll be a bit happy.”

In the first period, P.A. Parenteau got the Isles on the board first, something that has been a rarity on Long Island this season, and he did it on the power play.  Parenteau ripped a snap snot past McElhinney at 15:06.  28 seconds later, Blake Comeau scored his 6th of the year to make it 2-0 Isles.  Just 1:11 after that, Matt Moulson beat McElhinney on the backhand for an unassisted goal, his 11th, to make it 3-0 Isles, and McElhinney was pulled for Jonas Hiller.  The Isles outshot Anaheim 12-6 in the first period.

From that point however, the Isles’ offense could get nothing past Hiller, and the Ducks started chipping away.  With Isles rookie Matt Martin in the box for high sticking, Joffrey Lupul was able to sneak a shot past DiPietro with just 3 seconds left on the Anaheim power play for his 3rd goal of the year, drawing the Ducks within two at 3-1.

Early in the 3rd, former Islander Jason Blake slammed home a rebound past DiPietro to make it 3-2, but  the Isles would hang on from there.

Isles coach Jack Capuano wasn’t surprised by the crazy way the game unfolded, but he was happy to get the win.  ”Nothing surprises me,” Capuano said. “We played a great first period and then we had to hang on, but we did.”

The Islanders next game is Saturday at home vs. the Phoenix Coyotes.

PLUS/MINUS: Plus: The Islanders were 1-3 on the power play.  The Power Play unit has been sorely lacking in production over the last 22 games.  Plus: Isles D Radek Martinek and Milan Jurcina both returned to the lineup last night.

News/Notes:  Isles placed F Jon Sim on waivers.  4 of Isles next 6 games are at home .  The 2 road games are at MSG to play Rangers, at The Rock to play Devils.
