Islanders feed Ducks 3-2 loss, snap latest losing streak

In what may have been an early Christmas gift for their fans, the New York Islanders rose up Thursday evening on Long Island and tallied a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks in front of less than 8,000 fans at Nassau Coliseum.

Goals in less than two minutes from P.A. Parenteau, Blake Comeau and Matt Moulson sent New York (6-18-5) to a 3-0 advantage, and eventually only its second victory in nearly two dozen games.

Meantime, goalie Rick DiPietro (30 saves) rebounded after seeing Anaheim (32-29 advantage in shots) trim a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 to snap the team’s six-game losing slide.

”It’s good that we won, but we’re not happy,” DiPietro told the Associated Press afterwards. ”When we win 10 in a row, then we’ll be a bit happy.”

Parenteau gave New York the 1-0 lead on a power-play snap shot at 15:06. Just 28 seconds later, Comeau registered his goal. Finally, 71 seconds after that, Moulson made it 3-0 on a backhander to notch his team-leading 11th goal.

”Nothing surprises me,” Islanders coach Jack Capuano added. ”We played a great first period and then we had to hang on, but we did.”

Anaheim, meantime went from the penthouse to the outhouse, having defeated Washington a night earlier by a 2-1 score in overtime.

“It’s wasted points, as far as I’m concerned,” Anaheim Head Coach Randy Carlyle commented to insidesocal.com [2] afterwards. “It’s a wasted opportunity. We had an emotional win last night in Washington … and we didn’t play 60 minutes of hockey. That’s the disappointing part.”

While it is just one win for the Islanders, situated in the NHL basement with a league-worst 17 points, it hopefully provides some momentum from here on out.

New York hosts Phoenix Saturday (Dec. 18) at 7 p.m. ET.
