Motor City Weekly: Lions Snap 26 Game Losing Streak

Posted By Bob Ballard On Dec 19 2010 @ 11:16 pm In Detroit | No Comments

The Detroit Lions snapped an NFL record 26 road game losing streak when they defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 in overtime on Sunday.  The Lions last won on the road against the Chicago Bears over 1,301 days ago (Oct. 28, 2007 to be exact).  The Lions are finding success with their pressuring defense and a solid running game.  Sure Calvin Johnson and the defense front four gets most of the credit for the win, but it was the Lions’ backup running back who was the real star.  Maurice Morris, who is the backup RB behind Jahvid Best and Kevin Smith, gained 109 yards on 15 carries and scoring a TD.  His running opened up the passing game for Johnson and QB Drew Stanton. Give the Lions credit for snapping these embarrassing losing streaks (they snapped the longest division losing streak last week vs. Packers) by using their 3rd string QB.  That QB and the Lions travel to Miami next week to extend another streak – this time a 3 game winning streak.

DETROIT PISTONS

The good news for the Pistons this week –  they were 2-1 with wins over Atlanta and New Orleans.  The bad news was the lone loss was against the lowly L.A. Clippers at home.  The Clippers, who had not won a road game all season, dismantled the Pistons 109-88.  With that loss, the Pistons shook up their starting lineup against the Hornets by starting Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva for the first time this season.  They did not have Rodney Stuckey (toe injury) and Rip Hamilton (upset stomach), but managed to pull off an OT win against New Orleans.  Tayshaun Prince led the way with 28 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Gordon and Villanueva finished with 25 and 17 points respectively.  It will be interesting to see if Hamilton starts when the Pistons play at Toronto on Wednesday.  This has been a disappointing season for the Pistons so far with a 9-19 record, but the dynamics between Pistons’ players and head coach John Kuester have not been say… boring.

DETROIT RED WINGS

Goaltender Chris Osgood was denied his 400th victory as the Red Wings lost to Dallas in overtime on Sunday night.  The Wings went 1-3 this past week, but still remain in 1st place in the Central Division – 4 points over Nashville Predators.  They play next Wednesday against the Vancouver Canucks.

DETROIT TIGERS

The Detroit Tigers signed OF Magglio Ordonez to a one year deal on Thursday.  Ordonez had multiple offers with multiple years but decided to sign back with the Tigers out of loyalty to Tigers’ owner Mike Illtch.  The Tigers #3 hitter was having a solid season last year before he broke his ankle against the Indians in July.  The return of Ordonez means Detroit will have a solid 3-4-5 hitters in their lineup with Ordonez, cleanup hitter Miguel Cabrera and free agent addition Victor Martinez.  Ordonez won the American League batting title in 2007 with a career-high .363 average and has exceeded .300 in five of six seasons with Detroit.  He hit the club’s pennant-clinching homer against the Oakland A’s in 2006, and is a six-time All-Star.

BOB’S BEST

A shout out goes out to the Oakland University basketball team with their impressive win against #7 ranked Tennessee Volunteers on Wednesday in Knoxville.   Oakland came close to beating Michigan St. last week, but was poised to comeback against Tennessee after being down by double digits at halftime.  The signature win puts Oakland and their head coach Greg Kampe on the college basketball map.
