Remember that 6-0 start?

Atlanta took it on the chin against New Jersey this afternoon, 89-82. This is New Jersey! The Nets have two wins against the Hawks and six against the rest of the league! Difficult stat to swallow, if you’re a Hawks fan. Since that 6-0 start, the Hawks are 11-12. They’ve lost their last three on the road (including games at Detroit & New Jersey and can’t seem to develop any consistency.

The bench was the problem against New Jersey. The second-string scored only 11 points with a single field goal after the break. You can blame injuries as well. Joe Johnson will be out another month and Jamal Crawford (a vital sixth man if there every was one) missed the last three games with a sore back. It’s unsure if Crawford will be in the lineup tomorrow against Orlando. At least the Magic game is in Philips Arena (I can’t bring myself to call it The Highlight Factory) where Atlanta will test their six-game winning streak. The Hawks did beat Orlando at home a few weeks ago, but I’m not ready to count on anything.

Jeff Teague didn’t play much even after Jamal’s injury. His line had three minutes. Zaza Pachulia only came in for two, but when you’re not producing, you’re on the bench. Atlanta was close in the fourth quarter, but rushed decisions resulted in bad shots. When the chips are down, you have to be calm and make smart plays.

I’ll post again after tomorrow’s game with Orlando. In the meantime, the hockey Thrashers are leading their division after going a remarkable 11-2-2. The Falcons clinched a playoff berth after running over Seattle and will lock in home field with a win in their next two (at home with the Saints and Panthers). The Hawks are mediocre and they run the risk of being grounded.
