Kansas City Chiefs vs. St. Louis Rams: Sam Bradford Sputters As Rams Lose Again

Have we been fooled?
Have we been so mesmerized by the Rookie of the Year-caliber play of Sam Bradford that we somehow ignored the ineptitude of the rest of the team? I’ll admit, moments go by when I think Bradford can do just about anything, but then there are moments when he can’t do anything at all. It’s rather puzzling.
The Rams looked like they were ready to win a big one when they took the field. To start the game, they drove the ball inside the Chiefs ‘ 20-yard line in a shade over eight minutes, only to have the drive halted by back-to-back false starts. Long drives that result in field goals will not get this team to the playoffs.
The opening drive was the highlight of the game for the Rams on both sides of the ball. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur did a brilliant job of moving Bradford in and out of the pocket to avoid pressure. He used gimmick plays and, most effectively, the no-huddle.
But the progression of the offense stopped there. The Rams were out-coached, out-manned, out-played in the 27-13 loss. Matt Cassel escaped pressure at every turn. If the Rams came inside, he moved outside, and vice-versa.
I’m rather disappointed by the fact that he stayed as upright as he did. You would have thought that coach Spagnuolo would have sent the house every chance he had in hopes of knocking Cassel out of the game, but that wasn’t the case at all. The Rams defense allowed Cassel to find eight different receivers on only 15 completions.
And don’t even get me started on Jamaal Charles and his 126 yards on 11 carries. It seemed as though he was carrying a flesh-eating disease with the way Rams were defending him.
Overall, it was a rather disgusting performance, one that I hope to soon forget.
Even though the Rams lost another one, their playoff hopes are hardly kaput. A 6-8 record buys them one of two things by Sunday’s end.
1. Tied w/ Seattle (SEA) at 6-8, owning the head-to-head tiebreaker
2. Trailing SEA by one game, with the season finale in SEA
Things could be worse, right? Get ready now, I’m about to show you the silver lining in all of this. If the Rams miss the postseason, they’ll have a better shot at drafting a play-making deep threat at receiver in the first round.
Would you rather see Julio Jones catching touchdown bombs from Sam Bradford next season, or see Brandon Gibson catch a 3-yard screen on 3rd-and-11 in the first round of the playoffs?
When choosing your answer, do something Pat Shurmur and the Rams have failed to do all season.Think long term.
