Angels Striking out

Posted By Bill Mahoney On Dec 22 2010 @ 1:39 am In LA Angels Of Anaheim | No Comments

I’ve been waiting for the Angels to make some big moves before writing, but that didn’t happen.

Now I am not denigrating the Angels’ signing of left-handed relievers Hisinori Takahashi and Scott Downs. These two guys will make an impact on the back end of the Halos bullpen, but those were not the moves we expected.

You know how I feel about Carl Crawford. Would have been nice to have him, but if the Angels pushed as strong as they said then he just chose Boston, then so be it. Now I’ve read the Angels have offered Adrian Beltre 5 years and 70-million. Agent Scott Boras reportedly wants 6 years and 90-million. Wasn’t Beltre asking for 5 and 75 at the beginning of free agency? Sounds like Boras has the Angels in a corner and will try to take advantage of the market. At least the Angels won’t bid against themselves.

Maybe it’s just my frustration, but if Brandon Wood was half the player he was supposed to be, the Angels wouldn’t even be looking at Beltre. Maybe the Angels get Beltre, maybe they don’t, but what will happen if these negotiations go the way of Mark Teixeira’s. Remember, Arte Moreno got mad at Scott Boras. I bring that up, because in a couple years Jered Weaver will be a free agent, and Boras (also Weaver’s agent) will be asking for the moon.

In effect, even if the Angels don’t get Beltre, Mike Scioscia is comfortable with the platoon of Wood, Maicer Izturis and Alberto Callaspo. Give me a break! One can’t hit, one can’t stay healthy and one is a platoon player. Man, I am being too negative. Wood did hit .341 in the AFL, so maybe (and that’s a big maybe) he’ll get things turned around.

Rumors that the Angels are looking at Johnny Damon or Scott Podsednik, as alternatives. While these guys are not at the end of their careers, they are at least on the back end. Both can still hit .270-.290, but defensively, their careers are better as DH’s. I say bring em on, I’ve already seen Dave Parker, Gary Nolan, Mark Gubicza, etc, wind down with the Halos.

I better go. My negativity isn’t doing me any good.
