FOR SALE : FIRST PLACE HOCKEY TEAM

Who’da thunk it ?  Thirty four games into the season and just one game to go before the Christmas break the Dallas Stars are in first place in the West.

Coming off of a big 5-2 home win against the Montreal Canadiens they’re riding a three game winning streak and not only that, it’s the fourth time this season they’ve managed to win atleast three or more in a row. They kicked off the season with a four game win streak, put together a three game streak at the end of October and into November, rallied six in a row at the end of November and into December, and now play at home against the Flames on Thursday for an oppurtunity to head into the Christmas break on a four game win streak.

What’s equally important is what they’ve done in between their win streaks. Except for twice losing three in a row, they’ve managed to avoid any real slides to get themselves back into the position they’ve put themselves in the past two seasons and it just makes sense that when you have more winning streaks than losing streaks, you put yourself in good position.

They’ve not let themselves get too down at any point this season and you can tell the players are enjoying things so far. Winning is contageous and it seems that it’s spread rapidly throughout the lockeroom.

The Stars played a big road game on Sunday in Detroit after winning a close one in Columbus the previous night. After falling down 2-0 in the first, the team rallied to tie it before the end of the first period. Trailing 3-2 late, a full-visored Brenden Morrow popped his second of the game to tie it on a nifty backhand in front of the net with minutes left. Loui Eriksson fired the winner past Chris Osgood in the last minute of the OT period to give the Stars the win and place them one point back of Detroit for first in the West.

No doubt the players knew they could grab the top spot in the West with a win against Montreal, and they came out like they wanted it. They were outshot during the game but overall, they were the better team and created their oppurtunities.

They’re now one point up on the Wings, though the Wings have two games in hand. It feels good to see the Stars in first place nearly halfway through the season though and if Detroit happens to make up those two games then so be it. The important thing for the Stars is that they worry about themselves and just keep things rolling in the right direction.

It seems attitude is everything.
