The Los Angeles Lakers are the two-time defending NBA Champions.  On Christmas they were humbled.  The Miami Heat held Kobe and Co. to 14 points in the first quarter and never looked back.  There was not one person who rose above the crowd, but Miami’s “tres grande” played as expected and as opponents feared.  LeBron James put up a triple-double, Chris Bosh a double-double, and Dwyane Wade shut down Kobe Bryant.  Instead of the usual boring breakdown, here are some assorted details of the game.

JAMES JONES DOING HASLEM-LIKE WORK – Jones, who now leads the team in charges taken, drew a couple more on Saturday.  One sequence included him hitting a 3, then drawing a charge at the other end.  Udonis would be proud.

PHIL JACKSON DOESN’T LIKE TO PLAY ON CHRISTMAS – I love Phil, but my man, get over it.  If you are playing on Christmas, it means you are in-the-mix as an NBA Championship contender.  By the way, since when does a “Zen-Master” campaign for a Christian holiday?

KOBE BRYANT’S NEW SHOES LOOK LIKE A FISHING LURE – Chartreuse is a color so cool, they named a drink after it.  Maybe they should name these shoes Tarantino.

TWO NINE GAME STREAKS ARE ALIVE – The Heat have are on a 9-game road winning streak and are 9-0 this year when leading entering the 4th quarter.

LEBRON SECOND AMONG ACTIVE PLAYERS FOR TRIPLE-DOUBLES – Now tied with Grant Hill at 29, he is far behind Jason Kidd, who has over 100.  I think the biggest surprise is how far ahead of Kobe he is already.  Bryant only has 17.

MARK JACKSON RATES DWYANE WADE AS THE #3 SHOOTING GUARD OF ALL-TIME – This is high praise indeed, but warranted.  Jeff Van Gundy paused, but then agreed that Wade was right there behind Jordan and Bryant.  As Jackson pointed out, D3′s four game stretch in the 2006 NBA Finals might be unparalleled.  His defense on Kobe on Saturday was stout.

This Heat team has not won anything yet, but in December they have alerted everyone that they plan on playing in June.
