It was a cold and windy day in Jacksonville (38 degrees Fahrenheit) and was the coldest in Jaguar history. I challenge anyone who watched that game like I did to say anything about the Redskins Defence. There were so many injuries to this team that they were literally pulling guys from the practice squad yesterday. The Jags were in playoff contention and even though the Redskins were taken out a few weeks ago with multiple losses, they played their helmets off for this game.
The following is the list of players on IR just on defence alone. Add to this the inactives for this game LB Brian Orakpo, S Reed Doughty, and S Kareem Moore. I’m sure Jim Haslett had issues remembering everyone’s name!
The first possession by the Redskins was a great return by Brandon Banks and then a facemask call on the Jags when taking down Banks. The Redskins started in Jaguars territory. The first score by the Redskins was on their first possession by a Graham Gano 48 yard FG. He sure redeemed himself!
Up for the Jaguars and a Garrard throw is intercepted by Carlos Rogers to the Jag’s 19 yard line. Grossman passes to a wide open Chris Cooley who drops it! He would then drop 4 more passes in the game. That’s okay though as Grossman then throws to TE Fred Davis for a TD. 10-0 Redskins in the 1st. Anyone shocked? I sure was, but was loving every minute of it!
Jags get close for a FG, but it’s wide. Grossman throws to Santana Moss in the end zone (who made his 1000th yard this season) is picked off but after many replays shows the Jags player’s 2nd step outside of the end zone. However, the refs say that his first step was actually during the catch, but in full speed of the replay, was NOT clear, so don’t agree with that one, but the Jags get nothing from it and have to punt. At the end of the half, the Skins sack Garrard and the ball comes out into the end zone and is recovered by the Redskins, but they call it down by contact.
The second half starts with a Jags 3 and out and then a Redskins sack on Garrard, who fumbles, but is recovered by the Jaguars. The Skins get another sack on Garrard and they only can manage a FG. Tie game at 10.
At the start of the 4th quarter, Redskins are 4th and goal and just like in so many games in the past, Chris Cooley makes some plays, but is short of the TD. Skins go for it (which the commentators made very clear that they didn’t agree) and Ryan Torain jumps up and over the players into the end zone. 17-10 Redskins. The Jaguars fight back with a Garrard run into the end zone for a TD to tie the game at 17 a piece.
OT and the Jaguars win the toss. Garrard throws and CB Kevin Barnes intercepts and the Skins get the ball at their own 15. They attempt a couple runs, but at 3rd and 9, in comes Graham Gano for a game winning 31 yard FG.
The Redskins end with 4 sacks (Adam Carriker -1, Andre Carter – 0.5, London Fletcher -1, Rob Jackson -1 and Jeremy Jarmon – 0.5). Although Rex Grossman ended with only 182 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT, with those 4 dropped passes by Cooley, there would have been more.
Game ball goes to Jim Haslett and his defence for giving the Redskins Offense the opportunities that they were given and which were capitalized on. The Redskins now take 3rd place in the NFC East ahead of arch rival Dallas Cowboys who lost last night to the 4-10 Arizona Cardinals (hee hee). Thank you Santa for a Redskin win and a Cowboys loss.
The final game of the season is against the Giants at FedEx and the Cowboys travel to Philly to take on the Eagles.

Written by Mercedes Green
I lived in Greene County Virginia for about 5 years of my childhood. This span of time was enough to imprint the love of the Washington Redskins (and hate of the Dallas Cowboys) into my life forever, even though I am Canadian and still live in Canada. I am in no way an expert on sports, football, or even the Redskins, but I do absolutely adore them, their fans and their home state(s). My favourite Redskin is and will always be Darrell Green (not because we share the same last name lol). I've adored Chris Cooley since he joined the team from the 2004 draft and love London Fletcher. Hail to the Redskins! See you October 30th in my home town of Toronto.
