Pitt’s streak of wins against top 5 teams continued after taking down the 4th Ranked Uconn Huskies this evening, Pitt is now 8-0 against top 5 teams at home!! Pitt showed why they are arguably the best team in the Conference ( I have them as THE best team), Pitt beat the young Huskies 78-63. Pitt’s dominance was shown by their balanced scoring attack, their physical defense, and their veteran experience. Pitt did have a little trouble containing Kemba Walker, but what team hasn’t? Pitt forced Walker to work for everyone of his 31 points, Walker scored 31 on 10 of 27 shooting. Pitt DID take away everyone else wearing a Uconn uniform, Pitt was extremely precise in their dismantling of the Huskies. Four of the 5 Pitt starters finished in double figures, Ashton Gibbs led the way with 21 points and 7 assists. Pitt moves to 13-1 and 1-0 in the Big East, if you get a chance this season PLEASE watch them play.
As for the young Uconn team, tonight was both a positive and a negative. They have seen nothing but success for the most part this season, this was the first time it may have sunk in that Kemba CAN’T do it alone! The Huskies didn’t just play the best team in the Big East, but they played the best team in the Big East on the road! There isn’t going to be another arena in Big East play that will be as rough as playing at Pitt, the freshmen will be better after having experienced this so early. Uconn suffered it’s first loss of the season, it’s not the end of the world and they WILL get better. I was impressed that the younger players didn’t quit, or at any point look defeated. This will be an experience to learn from, the game was called extremely tight which led to foul trouble for many of the bigs. Enosch Wolf needs to get in shape so he can help out, the rest of the freshman NEED to play with more confidence. They are now 0-1 in the Conference, I doubt Coach Calhoun will be easy on them. This loss was a perfect way for these young kids to understand the road that lies ahead. Uconn’s next game will be at home against South Florida, let’s see if the freshmen will play with more confidence.
