Garden of Evil: Isles Blasted By Rangers at MSG 7-2

Matt Gilroy scored his first 2 goals of the season as the Rangers defeated the Islanders 7-2 last night at Madison Square Garden.
Gilroy, who grew up in Bellmore, NY (about 15 minutes drive from the Islanders’ home ice at Nassau Coliseum), and was the 2009 Hobey Baker Award winner (NCAA’s top player award), got the scoring started just 44 seconds into the game.
“It was nice to be a part of it and help the team to win,” said Gilroy, playing in his 22nd game this season. “I got some lucky bounces, but I will take it.”
With the exception of a few minutes in the opening period, this game was all Rangers, as the Blueshirts bombarded Islanders G Dwayne Roloson (who was just named the NHL’s first star of the week) with a season-high 52 shots en route to the victory. In the final two periods, the Isles were outshot 34-8.
It was the Isles first loss in 4 games and ended their point scoring streak at 5 games (4-0-1). The Isles battled hard through the first period, but fell apart after the Rangers jumped on them in the 2nd period.
“They work real hard as long as they feel they have a chance,” Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist said. “After we scored the fourth one, you could see they got really tired and started making more mistakes.”
Second period goals by Gilroy (his 2nd of game) and Brian Boyle gave the Rangers a 4-2 lead and the game seemed all but over.
Early in the 3rd, Brandon Dubinsky scored his 15th of the year to make it a 5-2 game, and the rout was on. RuslanFedotenko and Derek Stepan (PPG) added 3rd period tallies for the final margin.
Isles coach Jack Capuano was not happy with the way the team competed. The Isles had just come off perhaps their best victory of the season the night before in a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens.
PLUS/MINUS: Plus – P.A. Parenteau has now scored in 3 of his last 4 games, and 4 of last 6. Minus – Special teams continue to kill the Isles – PP unit was 0-2, and PK unit allowed Rangers to score on 2 of 3 attempts.
