As the New York Islanders battle through one of their worst seasons in team history, at least one player now has a more realistic shot at making the playoffs come April.

The Islanders have dealt defenseman James Wisniewski to the Montreal Canadiens for two draft picks.

New York, which is coming off of a 7-2 loss Monday evening to the rival New York Rangers, receives Montreal’s second-round selection in 2011 and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2012 in the trade.

Just 48 hours earlier, Wisniewski unknowingly got a look at his future team, as New York defeated Montreal 4-1 this past Sunday evening on Long Island.

Wisniewski, 26, saw action in 32 of the Islanders’ 34 games this season. He was the team’s top-scoring defenseman with 21 points (three goals, 18 assists).

Wisniewski, who will join the Canadiens for their game Wednesday night in Tampa Bay, has 118 points (20-98) in 286 career NHL games with the Chicago, Anaheim and the Isles.
