Islanders Trade Wisniewski to Montreal for 2nd Round Pick

The New York Islanders traded defenseman James Wisniewski to the Montreal Canadiens today in exchange for a 2011 2nd round draft pick and a conditional 2012 5th round choice.  The second round pick in 2011 is a compensatory pick granted the Canadiens since the failed to sign their former 1st round pick, David Fisher.

Wisniewski joined the Islanders on July 30 through a trade from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a conditional third round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

In 32 games this season, Wisniewski was tied for the team lead in scoring (3-18-21).

The deal appears to help both teams, as the Isles get a pick for Wisniewski, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent at season’s end.  The Canadiens were seeking a defenseman who could quarterback their power play unit with D Andrei Markov expected to miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

Montreal is currently in 8th place in the Eastern Conference, with 42 pts.
