Five Eagles Named to Pro Bowl

[1]Michael Vick, DeSean Jackson, Jason Peters, Asante Samuel & David Akers were voted onto the starting NFC Pro Bowl squad. Obviously the Super Bowl teams affect who will actually represent the NFC in the Pro Bowl. Let’s hope the Eagles players are still focused on the Super Bowl in Dallas, not distracted by the Pro Bowl in Hawaii (2010 Pro Bowl was played in Miami but Hawaii has reaffirmed their deal to bring NFL all stars back to Aloha Stadium).

Running backs Adrian Peterson, Michael Turner and Steven Jackson were chosen ahead of LeSean McCoy, who is a first alternate. Peterson, Turner and Jackson are first, second and fourth in the NFC in yards rushing (Ahmad Bradshaw is third).

[2]McCoy entered Tuesday eighth with 1,036 yards, but not surprisingly given the Eagles’ pass-first offense has significantly fewer rushing attempts (194) than Peterson (247), Turner (317) and Jackson (319). McCoy is second in conference in yards per rush (5.3) behind Brandon Jacobs (5.8) and also leads the conference in yards from scrimmage (1,587). He leads NFC running backs in receptions (74) and yards receiving (551).

[3]Defensive ends Julius Peppers, John Abraham and Justin Tuck were selected ahead of Trent Cole, also a first alternate. Abraham leads the conference in sacks with 13, and Tuck is second with 11. Peppers has eight – but also has recorded 11 passes defended, two interceptions and three forced fumbles.

With nine sacks, Cole entered Tuesday tied with Ndamukong Suh for eighth in the conference.

Aloha Stadium hosted NFL Pro Bowls for 30 years... until 2010. Oahu's Aloha Stadium’s maximum capacity for football games is only 50,000, and the Hawaii Pro Bowl was always a sellout

The NFL and Hawaii Tourism Authority announced the 2011 Pro Bowl date (Jan. 30 … a week before the Super Bowl, once again), finally quieting speculation about whether or not the annual all-star game would be played before the Super Bowl for a second consecutive year. Prior to this year, the Pro Bowl was traditionally played in Hawaii a week after the Super Bowl.

Miami hosted the 2010 Pro Bowl

In December 2008, the NFL announced moving the Pro Bowl to Miami, FL after 30 years of hosting the game in Honolulu at Aloha Stadium (pictured, above). In hopes of boosting stadium attendance and the TV audience, the NFL also opted to experiment with scheduling the 2010 Pro Bowl a week prior to the Super Bowl.

[15]The change of date worked, for the most part. Broadcast on ESPN on Jan. 31 during prime time instead of its traditional afternoon time slot, the 2010 Pro Bowl attracted the largest television audience the game had seen since 2000—12.3 million viewers vs. 2009’s 8.8 million viewers. A sellout audience of 70,600 fans filled Miami’s Sun Life Stadium, giving the game its largest attendance ever. Whether that was attributable more to location or scheduling was debated. The fact that the NFL agreed to move the game back to Hawaii but retain the schedule of a week before the Super Bowl (for years it was the week after Super Bowl Sunday) indicates the result of those arguments.
