Vick’s Quad, Locked #3 Seed, Kolb & JV vs. Cowboys

[1]Michael Vick [2]’s quad injury is serious enough that he might not be healthy enough to play Sunday – even if head coach Andy Reid wanted him to. It’s safe to say Reid doesn’t want him to. More than likely, Kevin Kolb and the “JV Squad” will see significant playing time in the season finale against the Dallas Cowboys.

[3]“I’m not sure he could get back,” Reid said. Reid hasn’t specifically come out and state he’s going to rest Vick and several other starters for Sunday’s meaningless game against the Cowboys. All signs point to Vick and many others sitting out and trying to get healthy for the Eagles’ playoff opener the weekend of Jan. 8-9. Reid’s press conference today offered nothing to confirm or deny this.

[4]Vick has taken a beating this year. He was sacked six times in the Eagles’ 24-14 loss to the Vikings Tuesday night, 34 sacks overall with countless vicious hits in his 11 starts. He was clearly limping in the locker room after the game Tuesday night and may have been hurt as early as the first offensive series. Reid said he’s not concerned about Vick being 100 percent in time for the playoffs – now just 10 or 11 days away.

“Surely, down the road he’ll be fine,” Reid said.

Look for Kevin Kolb [5] to start at quarterback while several other banged-up starters – Asante Samuel [6], DeSean Jackson [7], Mike Patterson [8], Winston Justice [9] – getting either most or all of the day off Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

[10]The Eagles are locked into the No. 3 seed in the NFC playoff bracket, and in previous years when faced with the same situation, Reid has always rested his players. In 2001, the Eagles had clinched the No. 3 seed and the Bucs the No. 6 seed going into their Week 17 meeting in Tampa. With a playoff rematch looming, both teams played their subs, and the Eagles won 17-14 on A.J. Feeley’s two fourth-quarter TD passes to Dameane Douglas. A week later, the Eagles beat Tampa 31-9.

[11]In 2004, Reid played the subs the final two weeks after the Eagles clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC after just 14 games. And in 2006, as soon as the Lions finished an upset win over the Cowboys in a 1 p.m. game that clinched the No. 3 seed for the Eagles, Reid removed his starters and played the subs the rest of the way against the Falcons.

[12]“You’ve got to look at what’s at stake if you play them,” Reid said. “Some guys need the playing time, some guys need the rest time. You’ve got to look at resting the guys who need the rest. At the same time, you want to win the game.” Reid said defensive tackle Trevor Laws [13] has a shoulder sprain and chest contusion, so look for him to also sit out Sunday. Another defensive tackle, Jeff Owens [14], will undergo surgery for a torn patella tendon. Owens got hurt in his first NFL game, and he’ll become the 10th player to go on Injured Reserve this year.

[15]Samuel had an MRI on his sore knee, and Reid said no structural damage was found. Jackson’s foot injury is still bothering him, and Reid said he had treatment Wednesday morning at the NovaCare Complex. Stewart Bradley [16], who’s missed the last two games with a dislocated elbow, won’t play against Dallas, but still has a 50-50 chance for the playoff opener.

Additional announcements will likely surface as the week progresses. Reid, who was rather cantankerous in his press conference, indicated that the final list would be announced on Friday. Thanks Coach. That’s when you are league-mandatedly required to announce them! [17] Full disclosure and stuff there Red!!
