Whitney latest Oiler casualty

Posted By Scott Pattison On Dec 29 2010 @ 10:48 pm In Edmonton Oilers | No Comments

Edmonton Oilers’ top blueliner, Ryan Whitney, could be lost indefinitely, on the heels of an innocuous injury to his right ankle during Tuesday night’s 4-2 home loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

Whitney, Edmonton’s leader behind the blueline, on the powerplay and up front having contributed 27 points (2-25) so far this season,  hurt his ankle after colliding with former Oiler Jocken Hecht.

Whitney underwent an MRI earlier today, but the Oilers have yet to release a prognosis.

For a team that has been forced to deal with the loss of pivotal players including captain Shawn Horcoff, Jim Vandermeer and Ales Hemsky (returned last night after a lengthy absence), Oilers’ bench boss Tom Renney may find his club’s most recent MASH unit addition, the toughest pill to swallow yet.

Rookie Jeff Petry will slide into the lineup Thursday, when Edmonton plays host to the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

In the meantime Oiler fans, keep you chins up and your sticks down.
