Uconn Survives Scare from USF

Posted By Wilson Tarpeh Jr. On Dec 31 2010 @ 8:57 pm In UConn | No Comments

The Uconn Huskies survived one tough game tonight, the Bulls from South Florida came in to Hartford with UPSET on their minds. The Bulls almost took down the 4th Ranked Huskies, USF hung with the Huskies long enough to force overtime. The Huskies showed some real mental toughness for a young team, Uconn held the Bulls to 3 points in overtime and those 3 points came with less than 1 sec left on the clock. Uconn beat USF 66-61,  Anthony Crater(14 points) was the USF player who forced OT with a BIG TIME 3 pointer!! Augustus Gilchrist spearheaded the USF attack with 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 1 block. If it wasn’t for that meddling Kemba Walker, Gilchrist and USF may have got away with the upset. Walker finished the night with 24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. The most impressive part of his performance was the 8 rebounds, Walker is listed at 6’1 and that’s kind of generous in my opinion. The Huskies were struggling to contain the Bulls in the paint, Coach Calhoun countered that by switching to a zone. I haven’t seen the Huskies play zone in a LONG time, they did a really good job! Walker and Shabazz Napier did a great job applying pressure at the top of the zone and routinely came down to grab the long rebounds. Just to help drive the point home, the Huskies were led in rebounding  by Walker and Napier. Napier played a great game, as the season has gone on we have seen him playing more and more point guard while Kemba has played off the ball. Napier had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Alex Oriahki scored 15 points, but he struggled on the boards only grabbing 3 rebounds!! Uconn moves to 11-1 and 1-1 in the Big East, up next for the Huskies are the 15th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Irish are fresh off an upset of  9th ranked Georgetown, the Irish play 5th ranked Syracuse tomorrow. Uconn needs to make sure the come out much sharper on Tuesday, this will be another big road test for the young Huskies!
