Irish Slow Walker, Hang on to Beat Huskies

Posted By Wilson Tarpeh Jr. On Jan 4 2011 @ 9:57 pm In UConn | No Comments

Notre Dame took advantage of their home court and beat the Uconn Huskies, the Irish forced Kemba Walker into shooting 8 of 23. The Irish held on to beat the Huskies 73-70, Notre Dame led 38-30 at the half. Ben Hansbrough led the Irish with 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Uconn did loose, but they showed some real growth by outscoring the Irish in the 2nd half 40-35. The reason I said growth was because Walker had a TERRIBLE shooting night and the younger players did a good job keeping Uconn in it. Freshman Shabazz Napier played a beautiful game, Napier stepped up in wake of Walker’s struggles. Napier had 18 points, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds!! For the most part all of the freshman had good games, both the upperclassmen Walker and Alex Oriahki struggled. A.O. only had NO points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks. The Huskies aren’t going to be successful in the Big East when A.O. and Kemba struggle, but it was impressive getting a chance to see how talented these younger players are. Jeremy Lamb( 8points&4boards), Roscoe Smith (11points&4rebounds), and Jamal Coombs-McDaniel (9points&4rebounds) all stepped up for the Huskies. Kemba Walker did have a tough game in terms of shooting, he still  contributed though. Walker finished with 19 points, 5 assists, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals! This is a reality, KEMBA IS GOING TO HAVE OFF NIGHTS! The rest of the team needs to play with the confidence it had tonight, they need to have faith that THEY can step up for Kemba. I believe they can, I never thought this year was going to be easy, and YES I am still pleasantly surprised by this young team. They just need to make sure they can get out of the Big East and get into the Dance, I really believe that  Coach Calhoun will have these guys firing on all cylinders by the end of the year. Uconn falls to 1-2 in the Big East after this loss and 11-2 overall. The good news is that  this is normal in the Big East, no team is safe because anybody can loose to anybody else on any given night. Up next for the Huskies, a huge non conference game against Texas!!
