Cards Breeze Through Big East Opener

The Cards kicked off Big East play without missing a beat by defeating Seton Hall 73-54 Wednesday night. The Pirates had no answer for Louisville’s full court press and high intensity transition game and got down big early. As usual, no one player stood out for the Cardinals as points were spread out among nine different players. Peyton Siva and Mike Marra led the Cards with 14 points apiece although they came in completely different ways. Siva slashed and dashed his way in the transition offense to earn his points while the majority of Marra’s points came via 3-pointers in which he was 3-5 from behind the arc. A huge promise point for the Cards was the emergence of 6’10 Freshman Center Gorgui Dieng. The young man from Senegal contributed 6 rebounds and 5 blocks but what really stood out was his improvement offensively under the basket. Dieng made 4 of 6 field goals and pulled down 4 offensive rebounds.
The Pirates couldn’t get anything going offensively from start to finish and went 18 for 62 in field goals and 6-26 from beyond the arc. Fuquan Edwin led the Pirates with 18 points while Jeff Robinson had 14. In typical Louisville form, the game was turnover galore. The Cards forced 14 Seton Hall turnovers but turned the ball over 17 times themselves. The win improved the Cards record to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big East. Seton Hall fell to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Cards next game is scheduled for Sunday at 12:00pm EST against the Bulls of South Florida (6-9).
