NFL Division Doesn’t Add Up

It’s the topic on every football fan’s lips this week: the West Division champion Seattle Seahawks qualifying for the NFC playoffs last Sunday with a lowly 7-9 record.

Most in the media are defending the NFL’s playoff criteria, saying it’s a freak occurrence for a losing team to qualify and that it’s nothing to fret about.

I’d agree, so far as it’s important to give the Seahawks their due.  The way the system stands today, Seattle earned their spot and won what amounted to be an early playoff game against division rival St. Louis.

The Hawks got some help from the referees on Sunday but I figure Seattle still has a few more calls coming their way to make up for the horrific officiating in their Super Bowl “loss” a few years back against Pittsburgh.

But when most media say ‘don’t tinker’ with a format that’ll perpetuate the possibility of a losing team making the playoffs, it begins to sound like so much gobbledygook.

It’s time the NFL did away with division alignment.  For that matter, it’s time for baseball to abandon the same system and revert back to pre-1969 form: two leagues / conferences, with the top teams making the playoffs.

As each division winner must always be awarded a playoff spot, there will remain the crazy possibility that a regular season loser will ultimately be declared the champion.

That’s not such a disturbing thought where the NHL or NBA are concerned.  Their playoff test, which seems to last for months, is so grueling that ANYONE surviving the examination is a deserving champion regardless of regular-season mediocrity.

Football and baseball can’t claim the same difficulty in their post-season challenge and then need to be more demanding in their entrance requirements.  It’s becoming all too common now in both sports where weak division “champions” get hot in the playoffs and walk away with the crown leaving many fans scratching their heads.

When the topic shifts to playoff “seeding” (ESPN’s Mike & Mike), the same divisional influence comes into play and into question.  One could argue that in each Wild Card match-up this coming weekend the visiting / hosting designations should be reversed.

And isn’t it time to stop pretending the winner of a four or five team division is some kind of a “champion?”

Both football and baseball have long histories of division alignment.  The fact that such a format seeks to give post-season representation to each region of the nation by virtue of division winners is good for fans and business.

If the divisions are scrapped, then simply make regionalism one of the tie-breakers.  Keep rivalries and favored match-ups in the schedule.  Is this change any harder to swallow than the current system where a 7-9 team is viable while the 10-6 Giants and Buccaneers are at home polishing up their golf clubs (or hunting bow, Jared Allen)?

Money as a motive is fine with this writer, as long as it doesn’t sacrifice integrity (PEDs), put players unnecessarily at risk (18-game schedule), quell fan excitement (two-week Super Bowl wait) or make the game look silly (playoff OT changes).

The divisional set-up is looking contrived, tired and a bit goofy these days.

    Steven,
Oh hell yeah! I’ve been suggesting this in MLB (http://prosportsblogging.com/mlb-baseball/expanded-mlb-playoffs-may-be-inevitable/) for quite some time. Mind you, the NBA and NHL are the other extreme, but you make good points.

Seeding postseason is essential. As the NFL does, reward to top teams for the regular season effort by giving them a bye week while the lesser teams playoff. NFL does it. MLB should do it. Why? Because as you say, lesser teams are advancing because they get hot in postseason. Baseball plays 162 games to determine who makes postseason. NFL plays 16 games in 17 weeks and does reward higher seeds.

As for regionalism… I agree that it is provincial by definition. You can still schedule local rivalries, etc. but the NFL has the advantage of a balanced/raked schedule based on order of finish. MLB of course schedules division rivalries with an imbalanced schedule so that is a consideration.

In the NFL, NBA and NHL they have eliminated most regional rivalries in favor of evolving rivalries among the best teams.

One question, what do you do with the AFC-NFC or MLB AL-NL or NHL East/West or NHL East/West?

My growing disdain for the divisional format comes not from their regional groupings. That’s a good thing. Instead Chris, it grows from the somewhat arbitrary placement of their respective winners into the post-season process.

Leagues and Conferences are a different story. While Bud Selig has eliminated much of the rivalry between the Circuits with inter-league play, important distinctions still exist between Junior and Senior. The Conference distinctions are less in the NFL but the historical rivalry is important, especially since old AFL teams comprise a good portion of the AFC. Fans need historical and regional touchstones which the Leagues and Conferences provide, as well as a logical championship format.

      Steven,
I enjoy our debate! Do you really feel that the AFL still has a presence? They celebrated the 50th anniversary recently and it made me stand up to take notice. 32 teams, 16 of them AFC but how many were really AFL? Chargers, Jets, Chiefs, Broncos, Raiders, Patriots…I’m all for respecting history but the NFL lets the Colt abscond from Baltimore in the middle of the night, shuffles franchises around for lack of success and replaces them with other relocated or expansion teams (Houston, St. Louis, Cleveland), etc.

I agree that the point is losing teams have no place in the postseason – especially when more successful teams exist. So your solution is to eradicate divisions but retain rivalries then use “regionality” as a tie-breaker? How would that work?

Also consider that the reason leagues break teams into smaller divisions is to keep games at the end of the season competitive and reduce the number of meaningless games. Even if hope is slim, teams tend to play harder if they think they have a chance to make the postseason – and fans will still buy tickets! Granted this is artificial hope in my estimation but the NFL is right to encourage it. How would you account for this in your plan?

Chris: AFL will always have a presence in the NFL as long as any of the 10 franchises still exist. And for the past 10 years no franchise has ‘existed’ quite like the Boston / NE Patriots. They ARE the standard today, as long as they go easy on the video.

Try to catch the next airing of NFL Network’s “AFL” mini-series. I think it ran last August. Simply superb.

If divisions exist because of the NFL’s need for regional representation, just by chance it’ll happen most every post-season. But if divisions are gone (“That’ll be the day!”) and three teams (9-7) are vying for the last spot, give the nod to a playoff poor region of the USA. My guess: maybe it’s a number five on the long list of tie-breakers.

My point being, we don’t need divisions to promote regional-representation in the playoffs nor to develop / continue rivalries. That’s why the NFL pays schedulers. Thanks for reading, Chris.

I’ve seen both the NFL net documentary and also the fantastic HBO documentary on the AFL and consider myself fairly well-versed in NFL history too. My point regarding the AFL was in the vein of recognizeability. Bufflo Bills haven’t been relevant since the 1990s. Houston Oilers are now Tennessee Titans. Denver Broncos NFL teams of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s are far more recognizeable than the old Brown & Gold. The AFL Boston Patriots have become the Class franchise of the NFL in 21st century. Los Angeles Chargers are in SD. Jets play in NJ not Shea and haven’t been champs since 1969. Kc Chiefs are not the classic Chiefs of early Super Bowls and those Super Bowls are no longer a clash of Titans between rival leagues. AFL-NFL was a 10-year rivalry that remained relevant for the Super Bowls of the 1970s. How many times are conference championships better games than the Super Bowl?

Like Vince Lombardi and Al Davis there will always be a place in history for the AFL but it doesn’t make them relevant today. The AFL did what the USFL, AAFL, UFL and Arena Football League have not been able to do – challenge the NFL, incite rampant change and insist on acceptance. No other league has done that successfully.

Now you’ve taken the storied Cleveland Browns away and replacede them with an expansion team. The AFC is ruled by the Indianaplois (former Baltimore) Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers who were NFL stallwarts before getting paid to jump to the AFC. Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans have no connection with the old AFL and the Oakland Raiders have degenerated from “Committment to Excellence” to simply “Al Davis Should Be Committed”… what remnants of the AFL still exist? Joe Namath who was last seen drunk hitting on Suzy Kolber on the MNF sideline? OJ Simpson? Lance Alworth?

Jackie Robinson is part of MLB history and is paid historical tribute all the time but the Dodgers don’t play Jackie Robinson Day in Ebbets Field. Respecting, admiring and paying tribute to history is fantastic, so long as we understand it is history.

Your article was an empassioned plea to ensure that the best teams make the playoiffs and hopefully the Super Bowl. The only way to do that is to eradicate divison and conference lines and choose playoff teams based on overall record, head-to-head record and quality of schedule, then seed accordingly, allow for byes and play it out!
