The PGA Tour underwent a major change in 2010 when we didn’t see Tiger Woods dominating the season with multiple wins and a few majors tossed in for good measure. However, what we did see was a youth movement in golf, noted by the emergence of Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Ricky Fowler, Bill Haas and Jeff Overton as well as the late blooming talent of Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose and Bubba Watson. We also saw the heart felt win by Phil Mickelson at the Master’s, culminating with an emotional embrace of his wife Amy Mickelson recovering from breast cancer. Lets not forget about the European Tour players that made their statement, claiming the remainder of the 2010 majors with wins by Graeme McDowell (US Open), Louis Oosthuizen (The Open) and Martin Kaymer at the PGA Championship, as well as holding the current bragging rights winning the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor.
So what exactly can we look forward to for the 2011 PGA Tour season? Well, even though the face of golf is changing, we should see the reemergence of Tiger Woods. As they say, “the more things change the more things stay the same”, so with Tiger reshaping his game under the tutelage of his new coach Sean Foley and showing signs of finding his game, narrowly losing a playoff to Graeme McDowell at the Chevron World Challenge in December, expect Tiger to return to his winning ways soon enough. Other than the usual familiar faces atop the leaderboard such as Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Jim Furyk and Steve Sticker, we should also expect the trend to continue where we find a number of golfers ready to make a significant impact in 2011 as well as position themselves for a birth on Fred Couples and Greg Norman’s 2011 Presidents Cup teams come November.
Therefore, over the next several weeks, we will take a look at a variety of player profiles and performance outlooks of golfers that will have plenty to say before the 2011 season concludes. Here a short list of players to keep a close eye on this year: Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Jason Day, Bill Haas, Justin Rose, David Duval, Ryan Moore, Ricky Fowler, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Matteo Mannasero and European Tour players that have accepted membership to the PGA Tour for 2011 (Graeme McDowell, Robert Karlsson, Louis Oosthuizen & Charl Schwartzel)
